Meaning of the Vergatario cell phone was distorted to hold back its great success

Caracas, May 13 ABN.- The Venezuelan private media have distorted the name of the cell phone made in Venezuela, the Vergatario, so as to give it a sexual connotation and to try to hold back the great success the appliance has had in the country, affirmed on Wednesday the head of the Venezuelan Telecommunications Company (Vetelca, for Spanish), Carlos Audrines.
“There might be some sectors worried about the competition, since the Vergatario is a telephone of good quality and at a low cost. It is like an ill nature to distort the name of the telephone,” he said.
Audrines expressed that the word 'vergatario' means optimal, outstanding, incredible or of the best quality.
“'Vergatario' means that something is incredible, the best, very good, excellent. In Venezuelan idioms, it is seen as that, as something excellent, the best,” he affirmed.
For instance, the dictionary of the Real Academia Española (Royal Spanish Academy) defines it as a Venezuelan adjective that means that something is of a great quality.
“About a person: That highlights or stands out by some quality, especially due to its value or strength. About a thing: optimum,” reads the dictionary that rules the good use of the Spanish language.
Therefore, the same entity that clarifies the meaning of all the words in Spanish dismisses any other type of meaning for 'vergatario', and it classifies it as a synonym of optimal.
“The broad meaning of the word is 'optimal', 'of a good quality',” affirmed the Vetelca president.
On the other hand, Carlos Audrines categorically denied that the mobile phone made in Venezuela is used for espionage operations, as some opposition sectors want to make believe.
He explained that the characteristics of the telephone itself make impossible these kind of operations since, in part, the Vergatario lacks of a global positioning system (GPS), a technology possessed instead by other brands.
“The issue of espionage is quite farfetched. This telephone has basic features as stopwatch, address book, calculator; it serves to communicate. That thing of espionage is too farfetched,” he declared.
Moreover, Audrines highlighted the amazing demand the Venezuelan mobile phone has had, reason why Vetelca is working to take to the market two new models with more technological features.
“We are working on satisfying the demand and even to take to the market other models of high end and midrange,” he stated.
But more than a Venezuelan phone, the Vergatario is synonym of technological sovereignty, endogenous development and a show of the Venezuelans' capacity, Audrines expressed.
“This is a work of inspiration,” the Vetelca head added.
The quality and high demand of the Vergatario was evidenced the same day it appeared in the market, when thousands of Venezuelans made lines since early in the morning to purchase the phone, which caused that before midday the mobile phone run out of stocks. |
