Mision Milagro guarantees free opthalmologic care to all Venezuelans

Caracas, Oct 23. ABN.- The Venezuelan Government, through Mision Milagro, guarantees free and quality opthalmologic care to Venezuelans, emphasized this Friday the President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez Frias.

During a visit to the facilities of the Opthalmologic Center of Mision Milagro, in the State of Vargas (Northern Venezuela), the Head of State shared with some patients that will receive free medical attention to treat their problems, Felipe Hernandez among them.

Hernandez, from the State of Guarico (Venezuelan plains), underscored that thanks to the health policies executed by the Government, this Friday he will go through surgery for cataracts and he will not have to pay the high sums of money required in private hospitals.”

In this regard, Chavez highlighted: Do you think that if Bolivarian Revolution would not come, Felipe would be here' Of course not! (...) In the fourth Republic, an opthalmologic visit to a physician was a luxury. A cataract surgery, which is simple, in a private hospital costs up to 9,000 bolivares (more than 4,000 dollars). A poor person not even working his/her entire life could pay that!”

Also, Chavez highlighted that one of the priorities of the Bolivarian Government is to offer Venezuelans a health system to which they can have access to no matter the economic condition.

“This is a real socialism, we are servants of the people. Why would we be paid for offering a health service if it is a right, a human right' Medical care must be free,” Venezuelan President emphasized.

The Mision Milagro is a humanitarian social program created on July 8, 2004, designed by the governments of Venezuela and Cuba to attend to the people of scarce resources that have eyes problems.

The internationalization of this program began on December 6, 2005, when the first group of Latin American patients, from Ecuador, arrived in Venezuela.

The Mision Milagro was born on August 21, 2005, in Villa Bolivar, municipality of Sandino, Pinar del Rio Province, Cuba, with the endorsement of the Sandino Agreement between the Commander Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro.

This year, the Mision Milagro is in its fifth anniversary and it has treated one million patients with opthalmologic pathologies.

One of the most relevant achievements of this program is that attends to 5,000 patients per week, which was previously the number of people attended to in a whole year by the public health system.
